What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an evidence based therapy method which uses bilateral stimulation with a goal to help reprocess trauma. It consists of talking about experienced trauma and reprocessing it by using bilateral stimulation (most common eye movements). EMDR method works with the memories one has regarding the traumatic event, by assessing them and reducing the discomfort regarding experienced trauma.  Why is it important to process trauma?

To work on trauma can be useful, when You recognize that something that You have experienced before affects how You lead life. Maybe You feel more anxious around situations what reminds You about past or avoid similar situations all together. For example: not driving a car after experiencing a car crash, being constantly worried about health after experiencing a tragic family member death and so on. Unprocessed trauma can sometimes make one feel being constantly on guard. Sometimes one will not recognize the daily triggers, but body will react to them by producing reactions: heart palpitation, hand sweating, headaches, dizziness, chest pain.
